The TikTok algorithm decides which videos to display to users on their For You page depending on their specific preferences. As a result, the For You page is highly personalized for each account, and no two users will see the exact same videos. This is an important marketing tool to understand in order to get their videos in front of the right audience. Here are three ways to utilize TikTok's algorithm.
1) TikTok shares videos that have views and engagement
The more engagements and views a TikTok video receives, the more likely it will be served to larger audiences on their For You Page. In our previous blog post, we talked about how TikTok measures Views. Every time the video starts to play (regardless of how long), TikTok count that as one "View." However, Views are only half the story. TikTok's algorithm also wants to see engagement on each video. Anytime someone likes, comments, quick taps, or shares copy link (copying the share link), TikTok considers that a separate engagement. The algorithm prioritizes videos with a high engagement to view ratio.
2) TikTok uses Captions to group video content
TikTok captions make your videos more accessible to a larger audience, including those who are hard of hearing. Besides accessibly, another important reason to enable captions is for the algorithm. When you turn on Captions, TikTok can now scroll through the content of your video to have a better understanding of what you are talking about. TikTok uses this to group videos of similar content together. Let's say you make video and say "this is my favorite cake recipe." With captions enabled, TikTok now knows to share your video with users who liked other videos about cake recipes.
3) Trending Sounds can help boost your video
Trending Sounds are songs or audio clips that are currently getting a lot of use on TikTok. This can range from dance challenges, to funny quotes, to relatable sound bites. When TikTok sees that people are using and engaging with certain sounds, the algorithm will prioritize videos that use that sound. Correctly using Trending Sounds can boost your video's reach. When you create a video, click "Add Sound" to search through TikTok's library. You can tell if a sound is Trending if it has a blue TikTok logo next to it. Sounds tagged as "Popular" are also good to use.
