March 20th is the first day of spring, and we'll be kicking off the change of season with a bright and sunny movie marathon. The many colors of spring make a perfect backdrop for lively visual storytelling, and the season itself often enriches--if not drives--the plot. Put away your winter coats, and join us as we celebrate the first day of spring with these 3 movies.

1) The Sound of Music (1965)
The birds are singing, the sun is shining, and the hills are alive with the sound of music. Set in the bright and breathtaking city of Salzburg, The Sound of Music features rolling green hills, blooming florals, and all the beauty of spring. The film is based on a stage musical of the same name, which itself was adapted from Maria von Trapp's memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Maria becomes a governess for the seven children of retired naval officer Georg von Trapp. Determined to stay true to herself, she brings joy, curiosity, and music to the estate for the first time since the children's mother had died. However, as Maria starts to become less of a governess and more of a family member, the Third Reich closes in on Austria. We love this movie not only for its verdant visuals, but also its springtime themes of new beginnings and fresh perspectives.
2) A League of Their Own (1992)
Being local to Philadelphia, we are huge Phillies fans, and one of our favorite things about this time of year is Spring Training and the start of baseball season. As we get into the spirit each year, we always get a hankering to watch A League of Their Own, as well. The film follows a fictional rag-tag team of players as they navigate a season in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL, which was only active from 1943-1954) and make it to the World Series. With immersive and authentic gameplay, A League of Their Own really pulls you into the season and takes you right to the field. Actors spent months in baseball training, and most of them did all of their own stunts. In fact, Geena Davis pulled off catching a pop-up behind her back--a trick her stunt double couldn't get. The cast is fantastic all-around, and the interpersonal dynamics of the characters make the film stand out from other similar stories. Despite being entirely snubbed at the 65th Academy Awards, A League of Their Own has been preserved in the United States National Film registry and is the most financially successful baseball movie of all time.
3) The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013)
This Studio Ghibli film is a visual masterpiece, with bright, breathtaking art that radiates spring energy. Adapted from the Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is the story of a bamboo cutter who finds a tiny magical girl in a glowing shoot. As the former begins to find gold and treasure in bamboo, as well, he becomes convinced the girl is of divine origin. He expends all of their resources on making her a noble princess, despite the girl's objections. As she is pushed further and further to enter high society, the girl feels she is losing her humanity and must come to terms with her origin. The animation in this film stands out, even among other Studio Ghibli projects, receiving critical acclaim. Frames were hand-painted with pastel watercolors that immerse you into the fairytale. In tandem with the artwork and color scheme, the themes of growth, rebirth, and the beauty of nature make it a perfect springtime movie.
