NationalCatDay is October 29th, and we've got just the feline-themed films to celebrate. Whether or not you're a cat person, these movies will get you in the spirit.
So curl up (with a furry friend!) and settle in to watch these 3 purfect movies for National Cat Day.

1) Cat People (1942)
While the film was met with very mixed reviews upon its release, the original Cat People is now considered one of the top RKO classic horror films. It follows Irena (Simone Simon), who, based on family myth, believes she is cursed to become a "cat person" when sexually aroused. The movie starts when Irena catches the eye of Oliver (Kent Smith). He writes off the curse as an antiquated story, and insists on marrying her. Because the production was made on a shoe-string budget, they needed to be creative when it came to the cats used in the film. The panther featured throughout the film was primarily filmed in shadow, to make it less obvious when fake silhouettes and other practical effects were used to depict the cat. This film was a breakthrough in many aspects, being the first to employ common horror techniques, such as a terrifying build-up to something that turns out to be completely benign.
2) Whisper of the Heart (1995)
If you're looking for something cozy for National Cat Day, this is is just the film. Whisper of the Heart is the story of teen Shizuku (Yoko Honna), a writer with a full heart and imagination. After following a cat who boarded a train, Shizuku is lead to an antique shop. There, she finds a cat figurine that inspires her to throw herself into her writing and create a fantastical story. When it is completed, she returns to the shop to share her story with the owner, who had agreed to let her have the statue as she wrote. To both's surprise, the story Shizuku wrote nearly mirrored the story of the shopkeeper's lost love, currently in possession of a matching cat statue. True to Studio Ghibli fashion, this story is wholesome, heartwarming, and visually breathtaking.
3) Pet Sematary (1989)
With it being so close to Halloween, we had to include another horror film to the National Cat Day watchlist. While the entire plot does not focus on cats, the events of Pet Sematary are kicked off by the death of a family cat. One of the great things about this film adaptation is the extensive involvement of Stephen King, writer of the source material. King not only wrote the 1989 film's screenplay, but was also very hands-on during production. According to IMDb, the film's cat Church was played by 9 different cats, including "a jumper, a snarler, and a cuddler." Despite the film's gore, no cats were harmed, and a member of the American Humane Society was even kept on set for the more disturbing scenes.
