As you could guess, we celebrate every occasion by watching movies, including Black History Month! Because it's crucial that Black creators receive their fair share of recognition and praise (not just during February, but every month), we want to take the time to ensure that we honor these directors. Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with these 2025 movies.

Celebrate Black History Month with These 2025 Movies

1) Sinners - Directed by Ryan Coogler

Stream on HBO Max

Sinners takes viewers on an immersive journey to the Jim Crow South. The film follows two outlaws--twin brothers, both played by Micheal B. Jordan--who return to their hometown to open a "juke joint" club. Just as the joint is getting off the ground, chaos breaks out, and the Ku Klux Klan (and a mysterious force) are lurking around every corner. If the plot doesn't catch your eye, perhaps the movie's 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes will pique your interest. It was even selected as one of the top 10 films of the year by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. Not to mention, Sinners received seven Golden Globe nominations (including two wins), 17 nominations at the 31st Critic's Choice Awards (including four wins), and a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations.

2) One of Them Days - Directed by Lawrence Lamont

Stream on Netflix

One of Them Days is an absolute thrill ride of a high-stakes comedy of errors. The film follows two friends attempting to scrounge up rent money for a merciless landlord. Even as they navigate increasingly-dangerous situations, the money seems to get further and further out of reach. SZA knocks it out of the park in her film debut, perfectly complementing costar Keke Palmer. In fact, One of Them Days is impressive all around, boasting a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Like Sinners, it has also been nominated for a plethora of accolades across multiple awards/film festivals, including the Black Reel Awards (with eight nominations), the Film Independent Spirit Awards (four nominations), and the NAACP Image Awards (seven nominations).

3) Opus - Directed by Mark Anthony Green

Stream on HBO Max

Opus tells the story of an eccentric pop superstar debuting his come-back project. When he invites a small group of journalists to his compound to reveal his work, absolute chaos unfolds. The group is met by cultists, mysterious disappearances, and worse. While the film received mixed reviews, it's entirely worth the watch for John Malkovitch's performance alone (yes, he plays the pop star, and even recorded an EP for the film). Supporting actors, most notably Ayo Edebiri, also reel viewers into this genre-defying thriller. Compelling cinematography further elevates the film, creating the perfect tense, ominous, and grisly atmosphere. Opus was director Mark Anthony Green's film debut, earning a nomination for Best Feature Film at the Sitges Film Festival in Spain.
